A person read every profile here before it went live. You see his photos; he sees yours only after you approve him. Your phone and email are never shown to anyone. Photos appear when she approves your request. Every interest you send carries a note you wrote, so make it count. Her contact details are never shown; she shares them if she wants to.

Sikh Brisbane

The community in Brisbane

Queensland had close to 28,000 Sikhs at the 2021 census, most in Brisbane’s southern suburbs and a growing number on the Gold Coast.

The Woolloongabba gurdwara is the oldest in the city; the southside around Eight Mile Plains is where the newer community has settled.

The South Asian community in Brisbane is strongest in Eight Mile Plains, Calamvale, Runcorn, Sunnybank Hills and Springfield, and the Sikh community gathers around the gurdwaras in Woolloongabba and Eight Mile Plains. Those are also the places a search on Rishta tends to start, though most members open theirs to the whole city and often to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane too.

For Sikh families the questions are specific: does he keep kesh, is she amritdhari, which gurdwara, how observant, and will the Anand Karaj be done properly. Rishta asks those questions in the profile so nobody has to ask them awkwardly later, and it lets you set them as must-haves so the people you see already fit. Community (Jat, Khatri, Arora, Ramgarhia, Saini, Ravidasia and the rest) is there for those who want it and “caste no bar” for those who don’t.

How Rishta works for Sikhs in Brisbane

Filters Sikhs here actually use: Keeps kesh / turban · Amritdhari · How observant · Community, or caste no bar · Vegetarian · Citizen, PR or visa · Open to living in.

Read by a person, or invisible
Someone reads every profile before it goes live. Until it passes you cannot search and nobody can find you. No bots, no recycled photos, no profile made in two minutes.
An ID check if you want one
Photograph your passport or licence and then your face, and your profile carries a verified badge. It takes about a minute, it costs nothing, and it is entirely optional — we are not asking anyone to hand over a document just to look around.
No firehose
Every interest has to carry a note someone wrote by hand, at least forty characters of it, so nobody can bulk-send. There is no daily quota to spend and no button that fires a hundred taps at once.
Talk without giving out your number
Once you have accepted someone you can call them, voice, straight from the conversation. It goes between your two phones and never through us. Either of you can ask to turn cameras on mid-call, and the other has to agree first. You can switch calls off entirely and still write to people.
A matchmaker, never from your city
Australian members are looked after by matchmakers based in Auckland and in other Australian cities, never their own. She will not run into you at a wedding. Free for women; on the Vichola tier ($1200/month) she searches and approaches on a man’s behalf.

Questions Sikhs in Brisbane ask us

Is Rishta open in Brisbane?
Not yet. We open a city when there are enough verified women in it for introductions to be real, and Brisbane is on the list. Join the waitlist and we’ll tell you the moment it opens; nobody is charged while waiting.
How is this different from Shaadi.com for Sikhs in Brisbane?
Three ways. A person reads every profile before it goes live. Women decide who can find them, and their photos are hidden until they approve someone. And no phone number or email is ever displayed on a profile, at any membership level. There is a longer comparison at /rishta-vs-shaadi.
Do women pay?
Not to search, be found, add photos, send interests, message or call. That is free for women permanently, and men pay for the same things. A matchmaker working on your behalf is a separate paid service for everyone, because that is a person’s time.
Can my parents be involved?
Yes. Family can pay for a son’s membership, can see a Family View page you choose the contents of, and can speak to your matchmaker with your consent. What they can’t do is create or run a profile for someone who hasn’t agreed to it.
Can I filter by kesh and by community?
Yes. Keeps kesh, turban, amritdhari and how observant are all profile fields you can set as must-haves. Community is there for those who want it, with “caste no bar” always available, and nobody is told which you chose.

A note from the founder

I spent six months on a paid plan on the biggest matrimonial site in the world, searching honestly for someone to marry from here. I found roughly ten men for every woman, a paid plan that produced nothing, and a fake profile I could make in minutes.

Rishta is what I wished had existed: women free with nothing held back, photos hidden until she says yes, every profile read by a person before it goes live, every interest written by hand, no phone numbers on the page, and a matchmaker who is never from your own town. I built it because I am looking too.
